Tyre Wear

Tyre Wear

How’s this for a fact? 65% of cars drive with under-inflated tyres and 80% of tyre blowouts and subsequent loss of control is caused by under-inflated tyres. It’s for exactly this reason that we’ve made sure at e-CAR Service we can install an Auto Tyre pressure monitor into your car which keeps you informed about your tyre pressure and temperature (selected workshops only – inquire first at an e-CAR near you).

Auto Tyre uses the latest technology to record the pressure and temperature of the tyre’s and will helpfully alert you through a flashing image displayed on your monitor if it isn’t as recommended. This system is essential if you want to put your safety first. As we know, if tyres are inflated to their manufacturer’s specification, the chance of blowout and a loss of control of the vehicle is severely reduced.

Tyre wear

Might seem like a small issue, but it can seriously affect your car’s performance and safety. Here’s why it’s bad and how it can impact your vehicle:

1. Reduced Traction and Grip

Why it’s bad: Worn tyres have less tread depth, which means they can’t grip the road as effectively.
Impact: This leads to longer braking distances, poor handling, and a higher risk of skidding, especially on wet or slippery roads.

2. Increased Risk of Hydroplaning

Why it’s bad: Tread patterns are designed to channel water away from the tyre. As the tread wears down, this ability decreases.
Impact: You’re more likely to hydroplane in rainy conditions, where your car loses contact with the road surface, making it hard to steer or brake.

3. Poor Fuel Efficiency

Why it’s bad: Worn or uneven tyres increase rolling resistance, forcing your car to work harder.
Impact: You’ll burn more fuel, meaning higher running costs.

4. Uneven Wear Affects Suspension

Why it’s bad: Uneven tyre wear can be a sign of suspension issues, but it can also cause more stress on your suspension over time.
Impact: This can lead to costly repairs and a rough, uncomfortable ride.

5. Risk of Tyre Blowouts

Why it’s bad: Thin, worn tyres are more prone to punctures or blowouts, especially at high speeds or when hitting potholes.
Impact: A blowout can lead to loss of control, which is extremely dangerous, particularly on highways.

6. Legal and Insurance Issues

Why it’s bad: Driving with tyres below the legal tread limit can result in fines or failed vehicle inspections.
Impact: In case of an accident, insurance claims might be affected if your tyres are found to be unroadworthy.

How to Prevent Tyre Wear from Affecting Your Car:

  • Regularly Check Tread Depth: Replace tyres before they hit the legal limit (usually 1.6mm).
  • Rotate Your Tyres: This ensures even wear across all tyres.
  • Maintain Correct Tyre Pressure: Over- or under-inflated tyres wear unevenly.
  • Wheel Alignment and Balancing: Regular checks help prevent uneven wear.

Keeping an eye on tyre wear not only keeps you safer but also saves you money in the long run!
