Check Engine Light

Is a dashboard warning that your vehicle’s computer has detected a problem with the engine, emissions system, or another related component

Check Engine Light

Check Engine Light

The “engine light” (also called the Check Engine Light or CEL) is a warning indicator on your vehicle’s dashboard that illuminates when the car’s onboard computer (the Engine Control Unit or ECU) detects a problem with the engine, emissions system, or other critical components.

What does it mean when the engine light comes on?

  1. Solid Yellow/Orange Light – Indicates a non-urgent issue that should be checked soon. Examples:

    • Loose or faulty gas cap

    • Minor sensor malfunction (O2 sensor, MAF sensor)

    • Emissions system problem

    • Small exhaust leak

  2. Flashing Red/Yellow Light – Signals a serious problem requiring immediate attention (to avoid engine damage). Possible causes:

    • Severe engine misfire (damaging the catalytic converter)

    • Major ignition or fuel system failure

    • Critical sensor failure

Common Causes of a Check Engine Light:

  • Loose or faulty gas cap (one of the most common reasons)

  • Failing oxygen (O2) sensor (reduces fuel efficiency)

  • Catalytic converter issues (expensive if ignored)

  • Spark plug/ignition coil problems (causing misfires)

  • Mass Airflow (MAF) sensor failure (affects air-fuel mixture)

  • Exhaust system leaks (EVAP system leaks)

  • Engine timing or fuel system issues

What Should You Do?

  • If the light is solid:

    • Check the gas cap first (tighten or replace it).

    • Use an OBD-II scanner (available at auto parts stores) to read the trouble code.

    • Schedule a diagnostic with a mechanic if the light stays on.

  • If the light is flashing:

    • Pull over safely if driving (to avoid engine damage).

    • Tow the car to a mechanic for immediate inspection.

Ignoring a flashing Check Engine Light can lead to expensive repairs (like a destroyed catalytic converter or engine damage). Even a solid light should be checked to prevent long-term issues.
