What Is a Car Service?
A car service is a scheduled inspection and maintenance check designed to keep your vehicle safe, reliable and running properly. The work carried out depends on the vehicle’s make, model, age, mileage and manufacturer service schedule.
During a car service, an e-CAR workshop checks the vehicle’s key mechanical and safety components and carries out the maintenance required at that particular service interval. This can include replacing engine oil and filters, checking fluid levels, inspecting brakes, tyres, suspension and other components, and identifying potential problems before they become more expensive repairs.
Regular servicing also helps maintain your vehicle’s service history and can help identify wear or developing faults early.
What is included in a car service?
The exact work depends on the vehicle and its service requirements, but a service may include:- Checking and replacing engine oil where required
- Checking or replacing oil, air and other service filters
- Checking fluid levels and condition
- Inspecting brakes and brake components
- Checking tyres and tyre condition
- Inspecting suspension and steering components
- Checking belts and other service items
- Checking the battery and charging system
- Checking lights and other safety equipment
- Checking for warning lights or diagnostic faults
- Inspecting the vehicle for signs of wear or developing problems
The service required is normally determined by the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended service schedule and the vehicle’s current mileage and condition.
When should you service your car?
Your vehicle should generally be serviced according to the manufacturer’s recommended time or mileage intervals, whichever comes first. Service requirements vary between vehicles, so it is important to check your service book or manufacturer’s recommendations.
If you’re unsure whether your vehicle is due for a service, an e-CAR workshop can assess your vehicle’s requirements and advise you on the appropriate service.
Minor vs Major Car Service
Not every service is the same. The work required depends on your vehicle’s mileage, age, service history and manufacturer’s servicing schedule.
At e-CAR, workshops can assist with both minor car services and major car services, helping you keep your vehicle maintained according to its servicing requirements.
Major Car Service
A major car service is a more comprehensive service performed at a longer mileage or time interval. In addition to the routine checks and maintenance carried out during a minor service, additional components and service items may be inspected or replaced according to the vehicle manufacturer’s schedule.
A major service may include checks or replacement of items such as:
- Engine oil and filters
- Air and fuel filters where applicable
- Spark plugs or other ignition components where applicable
- Belts and other scheduled service components
- Brake system
- Suspension and steering
- Cooling system
- Battery and charging system
- Fluids and other maintenance items
- Diagnostic checks where required
The exact requirements vary considerably between makes and models, so your e-CAR workshop can determine what your vehicle requires based on its make, model, mileage and service history.
Minor Car Service
A minor car service is generally a routine service carried out at a shorter service interval. It focuses on essential maintenance and checks required to keep the vehicle operating reliably between major service intervals.
Depending on the vehicle, a minor service may include:
- Engine oil replacement
- Oil filter replacement
- Fluid level checks
- Basic safety inspections
- Brake and tyre checks
- Battery and electrical checks
- General inspection for visible faults or wear
The exact items included can vary depending on the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements.
Which service does my car need?
If you’re unsure whether your vehicle needs a minor service or major service, don’t guess based solely on the age of the vehicle.
Your e-CAR workshop can look at your vehicle’s make, model, mileage and service history and advise you on the appropriate service.

FAQ
How Long Does a Car Service Take?
Usually a car service takes a few hours. So you will be able to pick up your car same day, but we will keep you informed every step of the way.
What’s the Difference Between a Car Service and a Car Repair?
A car service keeps your vehicle running smoothly and safely. It includes routine checks on oil, brakes, tires, fluids, filters, and other key systems to prevent problems before they happen. A car repair, on the other hand, fixes issues that have already occurred, such as a broken gearbox, leaking radiator, faulty starter, or engine faults. Simply put: service is preventative, repair is reactive.
Why regular car servicing is important
Regular car servicing is important because it keeps your vehicle running smoothly, safely, and efficiently. Routine checks help identify small issues before they turn into costly repairs, ensuring components like brakes, fluids, filters, and the engine remain in optimal condition. Servicing also improves fuel efficiency, reduces the likelihood of unexpected breakdowns, and prolongs the overall lifespan of your car. By maintaining a consistent service schedule, you protect your investment and enjoy a more reliable, comfortable driving experience
How much does a car service cost?
The cost of a car service can vary depending on factors such as the type of service required, your vehicle’s make and model, and the garage you choose. Basic services tend to be more affordable, covering essential checks like oil and filter changes, while full or major services are more comprehensive and therefore cost more. Prices can also fluctuate based on the condition of your car and any additional repairs or replacements needed. For the most accurate estimate, it’s best to check with your closest e-CAR Branch, who can give you a clear breakdown of what’s included.
How often should I service my car?
Most cars should be serviced every 12 months or every 10,000–15,000 kilometres, whichever comes first, but the exact interval can vary depending on your vehicle’s make, model, and age. Your owner’s manual will outline the recommended service schedule, and following it helps keep the engine, brakes, fluids, and other key components in good condition. If you drive frequently, take shorter trips, or notice unusual noises or performance changes, you may need to service your car more often. Regular servicing ensures reliability, safety, and long-term performance.

How long can you drive without servicing your car?
You can usually delay a car service by a small margin (e.g., 1,000-1,500 km or a few months) without major harm, thanks to safety margins in car design, but delaying too long risks increased wear, sludge buildup, potential breakdowns, and voiding your warranty. Always check your owner’s manual for specific intervals (often every 10,000-15,000 km or 6-12 months) and get it serviced soon after the due date, especially if you notice warning lights or strange noises.
