Pre-Holiday Road Trip Checklist
1. Under the Hood (Fluids & Engine Health)
The South African summer heat puts immense strain on your engine during long hauls (like the N1 to Cape Town or N3 to Durban).
Engine Oil: Pull the dipstick and check both the level and the colour. If it’s dark, gritty, or below the line, book an [Oil Service] immediately.
Coolant / Antifreeze: Check the reservoir (never open the radiator cap when the engine is hot). Your engine needs optimal cooling to survive long distances in high ambient temperatures.
Battery Health: Hot weather actually degrades batteries faster than cold weather. Check for a sluggish start and ensure the battery terminals are free from white, crusty corrosion.
Belts and Hoses: Do a visual inspection for cracked rubber hoses or frayed drive belts. A snapped belt in the middle of the Karoo means an expensive tow.
2. Tyres & Wheels
Your tyres are your only contact with the road. Potholes and heavy luggage loads require perfect tyre health.
Tread Depth: The legal minimum in SA is 1.0mm, but for a safe road trip with a loaded vehicle, you want at least 3.0mm to prevent aquaplaning in summer storms.
Tyre Pressures: Adjust your tyre pressures for a fully loaded vehicle (check the sticker inside your driver’s door jamb for the correct ‘loaded’ PSI/Bar).
The Spare Wheel: Do not forget to check the pressure and tread of your spare wheel, and ensure your jack and wheel spanner are actually in the boot.
Alignment & Balancing: If your steering wheel vibrates at 120km/h, get your wheels balanced and aligned before you leave.
3. Brakes, Steering & Suspension
A heavily loaded car takes much longer to stop and places more stress on the suspension.
Brake Pads and Discs: Listen for squeaking or grinding noises when you stop. If the steering wheel shudders when you brake, your discs may be warped and need skimming or replacement [Link to Brake Repairs].
Brake Fluid: Check the reservoir; if the fluid looks dark or hasn’t been changed in 2 years, it needs flushing. Old fluid boils under heavy braking on mountain passes, leading to brake failure.
Shock Absorbers: Push down hard on each corner of the car. If it bounces more than once, your shocks are worn, which severely compromises handling and braking distance.
4. Vision & Visibility
Summer storms can reduce visibility to zero in seconds.
Wiper Blades: If your blades are squeaking, skipping, or leaving streaks, replace them immediately (e.g., with Bosch AeroEco Wipers).
Windscreen Washer Fluid: Top this up and add a proper cleaning solvent to help clear bugs and dust.
All Exterior Lights: Have someone stand outside while you test indicators, headlights (low and high beam), brake lights, reverse lights, and hazard lights. Replacement bulbs are cheap; an accident is not.
5. The South African Road Trip Emergency Kit
Never leave home without these items packed securely in the boot:
Reflective warning triangle (Legal requirement in SA).
Jumper cables or a portable jump-starter pack.
A basic first aid kit.
A high-powered torch (and extra batteries).
A tyre pump/compressor and a puncture repair kit (Tyre Weld).
Valid vehicle license disc and your driver’s license.
e-CAR Pro Tip: Don’t wait until the week before you leave. Workshops get fully booked in December and April. Book your [Major Service or Pre-Holiday Safety Check] at least three weeks before your departure date to ensure parts are available if repairs are needed.
