Fluid Level Checks
Just like your body needs water to function, your car relies on a range of fluids to operate safely and efficiently. Neglecting to check or top up your fluids can lead to overheating, breakdowns, or even complete engine failure. Whether you’re driving short distances or tackling the open roads of South Africa, regular fluid inspections are non-negotiable.

Engine Oil
- Purpose: Lubricates engine components, reduces friction, prevents overheating.
- How to Check: Use the dipstick when the engine is cold and car is on a level surface.
- When to Refill/Replace: Every 5,000–10,000 km or as recommended.
- Warning Signs: Dark, dirty oil or burning smell.
Radiator Fluid (Coolant)
- Purpose: Keeps your engine from overheating.
- How to Check: Inspect overflow reservoir when engine is cold.
- Top Tip: Use a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water in cooler climates.
- Warning Signs: Rising temperature gauge, steam from hood.
Power Steering Fluid
- Purpose: Ensures easy, smooth steering.
- How to Check: Look at the power steering fluid reservoir, usually near the engine bay.
- Warning Signs: Stiff or noisy steering, fluid leaks.
Brake Fluid
- Purpose: Transfers force from pedal to brakes.
- How to Check: Check reservoir on master cylinder.

Transmission Fluid (Automatic Only)
- Purpose: Cools and lubricates transmission parts.
- How to Check: Some cars have a dipstick; others require a sealed system check.
- Warning Signs: Slipping gears, delayed shifting, reddish fluid leaks.
Air Conditioning Coolant (Refrigerant)
- Purpose: Keeps the A/C system blowing cold air.
- How to Check: Needs to be tested with a gauge by a technician.
- Top Tip: If your A/C isn’t cooling well, it could be a sign of low refrigerant or a leak.
Windshield Washer Fluid
- Purpose: Helps maintain visibility by cleaning the windshield.
- How to Check: Just pop the hood and look for the washer fluid reservoir—usually marked with a windshield icon.
